Should wanderlust strike— for an afternoon or extended exploration— Anacortes is the jumping-off point for all the Pacific Northwest has to offer.
Follow 12th street to the Washington State Ferry terminal for lunch in Friday Harbor on San Juan Island or for a weekend getaway in Victoria, B.C.
Beautiful Skagit Valley to the east boasts the country’s most renowned tulip festival each April, as well as a summer filled with berries of every description, and tranquil agricultural vistas. On the valley’s edges, the waters and tide flats of Fidalgo and Padilla Bays host one of the country’s largest heronries, plus water birds, sea birds, passerines, raptors, and beach life galore.

Some 15 miles to the east, are Mount Vernon and Burlington, burgeoning cities that can fulfill most needs.
Drive north up scenic, winding Chuckanut Drive to Bellingham’s historic Fairhaven district for specialty shops and dining. Continue on and you’re less than an hour from beautiful Vancouver, B.C., or head an hour or so south for the city lights of Seattle, or follow Highway 20 east into spectacular Cascades National Park.
But in the end, perhaps the best part of northwest travel is spotting Mt. Erie standing proud above the flat Skagit Valley and knowing you’re heading home to a place as beautiful as Fidalgo Island, Anacortes . . . and Portalis.
